How do your assessors grade my fancy color diamonds?
What do we look for when valuing your fancy color diamonds? Well, we grade them against certain criteria – depth of color and rarity being the most important factors to look out for.
Our in-house assessors value your fancy color diamonds according to their clarity and the intensity of their color. The brighter the color, the more valuable, and it’s the stones with the most vivid colors that fetch the highest returns. Colors may range from pale to dark. We will also take into consideration the current market trends. For example, pink and blue diamonds are the most fashionable colors at the moment, and can potentially fetch millions of dollars.
A diamond’s color is determined by comparing a sample stone to a master stone. Each master stone is known to display the minimum amount of body color that a diamond in that color grade may display. One of our experienced diamond graders here in Beverly Hills will compare a diamond of unknown grade against the set of master stones, determining where in the range of color that particular diamond resides.
What could my fancy color diamonds be worth?
On April 3rd, 2017, the Pink Star diamond was sold at auction in Hong Kong for $71.2 million, and in 2016 the vivid Oppenheimer Blue became the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction at $50.6 million.
These diamonds of course are exceptionally rare, but fancy color diamonds can often fetch higher prices than white diamonds. More realistically, a good 1.00 carat Radiant Cut Diamond can fetch $5,500, while a 1.00 carat Fancy Yellow Diamond $4,500.
While there can be debates about which is more desirable and therefore more expensive, the blue or the pink, red fancy diamonds are the rarest and thus the most expensive diamond color. The Moussaieff Red Diamond at 5.11 carats is worth $7 million, the largest fancy red ever rated.
